Talking Tolerance

Talking Tolerance

Talking about Tolerance.
How tolerant are we of others? Whether they are black, refugee or have a facial difference.
Tolerance as so inspirationally set out by my lecturer a few weeks ago, is mostly concerned with “accepting the other to be”. This of course is important and vital for working towards a more diverse and inclusive society. But tolerance is limiting, because yes, you can tolerate someone, but do you also engage with the other? Do you make an attempt to understand them, make space for them? Engagement goes beyond tolerance.
Today, there is a lot of attention on the negative, and that is shown in media mostly. We focus on the ones that are against tolerance or diversity, like populist politicians. But how do we deal with the ones that are willing to be engaging and want to work on diversity, but don’t know how? I believe, and research also shows this, that most of us really want inclusiveness, but don’t know yet how to work with that. What better to focus on than those that want a positive change, right? < 3
